Having conceded nine at Harrow Borough just five days earlier, the Woods were unable to turn round their defensive woes in a disastrous first-half of this FA Youth Cup tie. Hayes & Yeading simply ran riot as their pacy forward-line ran through the centre of the Northwood defence, taking the lead after just seven minutes as first-team squad player Isaac Osei-Tutu burst through and finished clinically.

The second came after 15 minutes as Aristede Bassele shrugged of the challenge of Michael Uche to slot past the unprotected Max Easton in goal and it was soon 3-0 as Aaron Harriott managed to avoid being offside for probably the only time in the game to fire home.  Easton made a good save to deny Andrew Dean from close-range after 23 minutes and the Woods did begin to compete more as the half wore on, recording their first effort on goal when Lamin Cole ended a good run with a shot just wide of the post.

But the home side weren’t finished and they struck a killer blow on 41 minutes as Max Hubbard’s ball across the area was finished with a cracking drive from the impressive Bassele that gave Easton no chance. Sadly, things got even worse with pretty much the last kick of the half as another long-ball saw Osei-Tutu outpace Louis Judge and make it 5-0.

After the break, the Woods showed some good character to battle hard throughout and, while United may have taken their foot of the gas a little, they actually dominated proceedings with Jack Hutchinson pulling the strings throughout in midfield. Nathan Henry put an early effort wide and then Hutchinson latched onto a ball from Callum Wright but fired wide. Wright then curled a free-kick not that far wide as the Woods continued to make inroads.

Hutchinson became a familiar sight bursting from the midfield but perhaps should have done more with his final ball as his shooting was never quite accurate enough. Henry set him up for a good chance on 77 minutes and though he beat goalkeeper Luke Daley, the ball flashed the wrong side of the post. After 81 minutes, a jinking run down the left from Cole saw him cut the ball back but there was no-one there to add the vital touch and the impressive Adam Butler cleared the danger.

The home side still went closest to adding to the score though. Easton made a good save low down from Bruno Goncalves while a late free-kick deflected onto a post and rebounded safely into the arms of the Woods ‘keeper. So there will be no long FA Youth Cup run for the Woods youngsters this season and at this stage they appear to have a lot of work to do to get back to being a competitive unit for the challenge of the Ryman Youth League this season.
