Sadly the writer knows very little about the first-half of this game due to the gridlock around the A40 between Ealing and Ruislip. Arriving two minutes before the break, I was told that Cameron Gilmartin had put Hayes in front on the half-hour but that Romaine Walker had managed to fire in an equaliser about five minutes later.

So, to the second-half, and it certainly packed in enough action and entertainment throughout to keep the interest of the sparse crowd. Walker broke through and forced Luke Daley into a fine early save but it was the visitors who regained the lead on 55 minutes as the ball was given away in midfield and a simple pass let in Nicke Kabamba who finished well.

It needed a swift response and it came four minutes later when Jack Hutchinson threaded a fine early ball through to Walker who sped away from the chasing defenders and this time buried his shot past Daley.

Still Hayes were not finished, though, and they were back in front after 61 minutes when Chevy Hart converted a far post cross and the Woods were up against it once more. The Woods made a double substitution as they looked for a way back with Julian Cole and Julian Smith entering the contest and within a minute Walker was bundled over in the box for what looked like a certain penalty but the claims were waved away.

Zain Khan went close with a free-kick but it was Walker who managed to level the scores for a third time, completing his hat-trick on 70 minutes with a thumping strike. This time Hayes were unable to respond as Northwood stepped up the pace. Cole forced Daley into a diving save and then both Cole and Smith both had headers wide and over in quick succession.

It was after 79 minutes that the winning goal came as Walker took advantage of a lack of communication between defender and ‘keeper to steal the ball and roll it into the net for his, and Northwood’s, fourth of the game.
There could have been more but Walker’s slalom run through the defence ended with a shot that crashed back off the post and then Hutchinson’s shot on the turn was pushed over athletically by Daley.
