Northwood bowed out of this year’s Middlesex Senior Youth Cup at the semi final stage to an excellent Staines outfit.  Ultimately, the fittest team won on the night and their levels of fitness certainly allowed the visitors to fully express their skills.

Staines went off at a terrific pace and Bill Fishenden had to be at his very best in goal to stop the visitors from taking the lead.  Although Northwood almost took the lead in the fifteenth minute, when Ben Trout just failed to bundle in a cross from Shane O’Neill, Staines broke quickly to score themselves, 0-1.

Northwood then had their best phase of the match and after 20 minutes Mickele Thomas headed in a Jack Bennett corner, 1-1. Northwood then took the lead in the 34th minutes when a brilliant drive from Stuart Onslow went through the keeper, 2-1

Northwood held on to this lead until half time although they did suffer the blow of losing Thomas with a hamstring problem on 41 minutes, replaced by Chris White.

The Woods started the second half well but were rocked back when Staines got a penalty for handball in the area. Staines scored to level the scores 2-2

Staines then took control of the match and certainly looked the most likely team to score the next goal. Northwood made two more tactical substitutions, Feye Obileye for Jack Bennett and Ryan Duffy for the tiring Shane O’Neill, and they held on to force extra time.

There was only one team in it during the first half of extra time as Staines pushed forward relentlessly.  Their next goal came direct from an in swinging free kick in the last minute of that half, 2-3. Northwood went for broke at the start of the last fifteen minute period and were rewarded on 110 minutes when Stuart Onslow cracked in another great drive to level at 3-3.

However, equity lasted just two minutes as Staines swept forward again and snatched the lead, 3-4.  Northwood battled to the end and threw the kitchen sink at the Staines goal but it wasn’t meant to be.

Fair play to Staines, who were worthy winners on the night. The Woods gave everything but they lost out to an excellent team who in the final analysis simply were fitter, and this allowed them to play an excellent brand of football.

Stars for Woods were captain David Sexton, Onslow, Hogan and goalkeeper Bill the Fish.
