The Northwood reserves travelled to Honeycroft for their Middlesex Premier Cup tie knowing that Uxbridge had won their last seven matches, and that this would be a big test of how far they have come this season. With first team boss Mark Burgess watching from the stands, the pressure of the occasion got to one or two of the lads and unforced errors saw Woods concede two poor goals in the first twenty minutes or so.

Mistakes aside, Northwood were playing some great football, and although it was still 2-0 at half-time, they were still very much in the game, and after a motivational team-talk from Burgo, the boys come out fighting.

The third goal of the evening was always going to be decisive and when a scrambled effort by Josh Lambe was adjudged to have crossed the line, Woods were really back in it. It should be said that at this time defenders Giles Townsend and David Palmer were carrying knocks, but it made little difference as the team were all fighting hard for each other.

At 2-1 down Dave Fox began to use his substitutes – and how well they did when they came on! Harry Smart, who replaced the excellent Ronnie Blagden, levelled things up shortly after coming on. Northwood were now in the ascendency but injuries made the possibility of extra-time look like a real worry.

But Woods didn’t have to worry, because a fantastic move down the right hand side, which involved Under 18s players Giles Townsend and Michael Elderfield, saw the ball crossed over to Luke Fox. He had only been on the field a short time but the goal  he hit will be remembered for a long time to come; it was a better version of that scored by the Manchester United youngster Adnan Januzaj against Sunderland, and is definitely candidate for goal of the season.

With Al-Ashban having an exceptional game at the back, Northwood withstood an Uxbridge onslaught, and with just minutes left Harry Smart put the game beyond all doubt with a superb free kick which gave the keeper no chance.

A home tie against Southall or Hanwell Town Reserves is the reward and it is a game we should look forward to; it would be nice to promote this game and see if we can get a decent crowd down to enjoy what is looking like a terrific group of players.
