I have to say it, but this was definitely a game of two halves! Northwood went into this opening fixture with a side who had never played together, and at times in the first half it showed. Although, it has to be said, that the half-time score line of 0-4 definitely didn’t tell the whole story.

Newport took every chance that came their way, whereas Northwood who had as many opportunities just couldn’t find the back of the net.

Time for a half-time team talk from manager Steve Blagden! What a talk it must have been as Northwood came out all guns blazing and it was little surprise when substitute Ronnie Blagden scored with a great shot.

This gave Northwood the tonic which they needed and a second goal followed shortly after when Aaron Ruszel calmly slotted home.
It’s fair to say that Northwood were now so dominant that they looked like scoring every time that they attacked. Patience was now the name of the game, and after several near misses they were awarded a penalty, which Wayne Jackson converted with some aplomb.

Could the Woods pull off a remarkable comeback? Indeed they could, as five minutes from the end Aaron Ruszel again found the net from close range.

It was desperate stuff in the closing stages as Newport Pagnell grimly hung on for a point despite incessant pressure, and they looked a very relieved side when the referee blew for time.
What a terrific first match we had witnessed. Well done to all.
