OFF SONG WOODS THROUGH
HARROW ST MARY’S 1 NORTHWOOD 3
Northwood reached the semi-final of the Middlesex League Challenge Cup on Saturday, but their performance bore little resemblance to the form shown by the Woods in recent months.
The Woods started slowly, still nursing the bruises from their midweek clash with Harefield United, and the small, heavy Harrow pitch did not make the task easy for Northwood.
Fluency was sadly missing in the Woods’ play, and the super strike force of Ellis, Cooper and Livingstone looked a shadow of their former selves.
Goalkeeper Les Currell had to be in good form early on, and Alan Merison marshalled the defence well. As the match went on, Northwood began to take territorial advantage, and they finally struck in the 40th minute.
Merison knocked a good first-time ball into the home side’s half, where Ellis came away from his marker and a neat lob went to Gould, who lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper.
Harrow’s big striker Brown made it one apiece early in the second half, and it was anybody’s game, but Tidd and Heslop began to revel in the heavy conditions. A neat one-two left Heslop free to cross into the box, and there was Cooper to head gleefully home.
Northwood were now well on top, and Ellis made it three after nice play by Tidd.
Northwood: Currell, Heslop, Mills, Merison, O’Donnell, Gould, Tidd, Harvey, Livingstone, Ellis, Cooper. Sub. Manley.
