MATCH REPORTS 1975-76

Saturday 3rd January 1976
TWO SENT OFF AS WOODS CRASH
NORTHWOOD 1  STAINES TOWN 2

Northwood had two players sent off on Saturday as they produced a display that let themselves down and  gave a mediocre Staines outfit the present of a place in the quarter-final of the Middlesex Intermediate Cup.

As early as the 23rd minute Northwood were reduced to ten men when Heslop was sent off for a crude challenge on Talbot, and near the end Franklin was dismissed for a remark to the referee.

In the early exchanges it was even and Northwood, although not at their best, were giving as good as they received. Robin Tidd was working hard in midfield, and a big influence on the game.

The match was mainly contested in midfield, but Northwood – without Ashley and Jones – held their own. Barry Gould, the Woods skipper, was exceptional, and had a grip on things throughout the game.

But ultimately, lack of discipline cost Northwood dearly, and a Gary Cooper goal was not enough to keep them in the competition.

Northwood:  Bowden, Hammond, Harman, Gould, Saunders, Tidd, Franklin, Heslop, Dibbens, Roberts, Cooper.
