It was Uxbridge who gained bragging rights from this thoroughly entertaining Middlesex derby, giving the Reds their first win of the season thanks to a late headed goal from substitute Chris Moore. It is now over ten years since Uxbridge manager Tony Choules left the same role at Northwood but there is still an interesting rivalry because of the history, and there were familiar names who made a big impact in this game.

Mark Burgess still had to make do without injured defender Steve Brown while Jordan Lawal was unavailable so Tommy Walsh came into the midfield for his first start of the season.

There was a distinctively slow start to the game as both sides cancelled each other out but Uxbridge lifted the tempo with the opening goal in the 17th minute. Craige Tomkins knocked in a free-kick that bounced just inside the area and was met at the near-post by Mark Dennison’s glancing header which gave goalkeeper Berkley Laurencin no chance.

Northwood’s response was immediate as Nana Asamoah was put through on goal but his fierce shot crashed back off the bar with goalkeeper Reece Pickford nowhere. Joakim Ehui was first to the rebound but he saw his effort blocked and then knocked his second effort well over. The pressure from the Woods continued and after winning a corner, Dave Lawrence curled the ball in and George Nicholas came round the back to head down and in at the far post.

The home side rallied again and they should have regained the lead on 31 minutes as Tomkins flicked a neat ball to Matt Woods, who made raced down the right before cutting a perfect ball back for Lewis Cole but the youngster side-footed his shot the wrong side of the post. Tomkins forced Laurencin into a low save shortly afterwards while at the other end a curling Lawrence free-kick was comfortably taken at the far post but Uxbridge went close again before the break. Woods left Burgess and Walsh in his wake as he cut in from the right and centred to the far post but Jake Groves drove his shot across goal and wide.

An injured Burgess was substituted at half-time and replaced by youngster Mason Yorke, and the Reds enjoyed the better of the early exchanges. Woods chipped, turned but shot over but after 51 minutes an advantage played by the referee allowed Groves to race down the right and although Woods failed to control his centre, it rolled kindly to Tomkins, who blasted home.

But as before, once behind Northwood looked more likely to score and just two minutes later Asamoah took aim from a free-kick with a real cracker but was unlucky once more as it found the crossbar again. On the hour, the home side felt hard done by when James Duncan’s attempted clearance flew towards his own goal and Laurencin did well to keep it out with his hands. Not a back-pass was the referee’s call and the Woods broke quickly. The ball was played out to Sam Byfield and he did well to knock in an excellent cross which Pickford punched out, but Nicholas was onto it and he hit an excellent strike that flew into the top corner and level the scores once more.

Substitute Danny Julienne played a neat ball through for Woods, whose first touch let him down and the ball rolled through to Laurencin, but then the visitors came close to taking the lead for the first time. Byfield exchanged passes with Nicholas and was in on goal but he could only poke a shot towards goal and Pickford just managed to keep it out with a foot.

Another good move saw Lawrence set up Nicholas for a chance of a hat-trick and he hit a good shot but Pickford dived and just managed to push the ball away with Byfield given offside as he looked to snaffle the loose ball. Substitute Javonne Molloy then had two chances in quick succession. Firstly Byfield knocked a good ball to him on the edge of the box and he slid his shot just wide of the post and then he raced onto a neat touch from Lawrence and poked the ball past Pickford only for the ball to roll inches wide of the near post.

After 85 minutes Ehui was replaced by Omar Vassell and the substitute had an immediate chance to make a name for himself as he received the ball unmarked on the right. It needed a shot with two players coming in for a rebound if required but instead he cut the ball back and Uxbridge cleared.

The Woods had been on top but they fell to a sucker punch two minutes later. Tomkins was dispossessed down the right but a tackle for a 50/50 ball between Walsh and Groves cannoned straight back to an unmarked Tomkins and when he crossed to the near-post it was the experienced Moore who had got across to glance a header past Laurencin for what proved to be the winning goal.
