John first played for Northwood in September 1978, playing a part in securing the Hellenic League Division One title. He left for a season before returning in 1980 for another two years. John then played for Harefield United, Staines Town, Weymouth and Southall, where he was a member of the side which reached the FA Vase final in 1986.

So, it was a coup when John returned to Chestnut Avenue the following season for a third spell, having a spell as player-manager before leaving in 1988.
