Northwood made it two league wins out of two as they maintained their promising start to the season with a comfortable victory over Binfield in front of a healthy Bank Holiday crowd at The Skyline.

There was one change to the Woods team which began the previous week’s FA Cup tie, with Harry McCorkell making his first start in a midfield still missing the services of Riccardo Alexander-Greenaway as Archie Coulter dropped to the bench.

Northwood were on the front foot from the off with Binfield having to negotiate a couple of early Luke Tingey throws into the danger area – Harry McCorkell’s goalward back header being cleared away before Harry Gallagher saw his header deflected behind after goalkeeper Harvey Rackley-Hayes attempted to punch clear.

The visitors were forced into an early substitution as Zeid Hannachi replaced the injured Tyrone Knight. And Woods continued to ask all the questions with Osaretin Otote firing over on the half volley after combining with Harry McCorkell on the edge of the box before a short corner led to Deago Dunbar-Bonnie swinging over a far post cross which was met by Tingey who headed narrowly wide.
Binfield were having to do all the defending as Northwood continued to move the ball around with purpose – Dan Williams latching onto a ball from right-back Teddy Stacey before creating space for a low shot from the edge of the box which was turned round the upright by Rackley-Hayes.

Northwood finally got the goal which their play deserved as they took the lead on 19 minutes, Rackley-Hayes only able to claw Dunbar-Bonnie’s in swinging as far as Tingey whose header was touched on by Stacey and into the visitors’ net.

The Moles briefly threatened as Kieran Robinson’s attempted chip narrowly cleared the home crossbar. But Woods confirmed their superiority as they extended their lead on 23 minutes – Kofi Anokye-Boadi spreading the ball out to Otote who fired in a low cross which was met by Willams in the six-yard box for his third goal in as many games.

Having fallen further behind, Binfield began to look more comfortable during the remainder of the half and they had a couple of opportunities as Troy Murray’s rising shot narrowly cleared the far stanchion before Michak Stanic-Stewart broke strongly into Northwood territory and released a shot which was gathered by Andrew McCorkell.

The second period opened in a similar fashion with the lively Hannachi spurning a good opportunity as he miscued at the far post. And Hannachi was involved in the Moles reducing the deficit with a goal on 52 minutes as he created the opening for Dontaye Whittaker who applied an easy finish.

Having been punished for a lethargic start to the second half, sloppy defending presented Whittaker with a chance to increase his tally as he poked the ball past keeper McCorkell but thankfully for Northwood, also beyond the far post.

Woods needed a reset, and they didn’t have to wait long as they forced a corner which was delivered on a sixpence by Dunbar-Bonnie and met by Gallagher who headed home at the near post to restore the two-goal advantage with 58 minutes on the clock.

The Moles to their credit stuck to their task and they gave Northwood a little reminder as Hannachi latched onto a long ball from the back before his shot was blocked by a timely intervention from Tingey.

Woods made a change on the hour as Otote made way for Sam Jenkins to provide some fresh legs in midfield. And the hosts effectively put the game to bed with a fourth goal on 65 minutes as Anokye-Boadi  ran on to Williams’ through-ball before calmly stroking the ball beyond Rackley-Hayes with a sublime finish to open his Northwood account.

The fourth goal appeared to knock the stuffing out the visitors as Northwood went in search of further goals, Dunbar-Bonnie firing narrowly over before Jaden Newman, a 72nd minute replacement for Williams, saw his shot deflected wide for a corner. And Newman was involved again as his audacious attempt from the centre circle drifted over Rackley-Hayes but wide of the woodwork.

Northwood made a final change on 84 minutes as Ben Crowder was introduced for Jack Smith, but with a good afternoon’s work behind them, Woods appeared happy to settle for what they had as the clock ticked down. However, the Moles forced a couple of corners which were comfortably dealt with by the home defence before the curtain came down on another highly satisfactory afternoon for Northwood.
