Northwood did well to finish the game at home to Whyteleafe with a hard earned point in a 0-0 draw, against a side who beat them 4-1 the previous week, particularly as they had to play for 70 minutes with ten men.

The only real action in a first half, in which both teams had a lot of possession but neither bothered either keeper, was when debutant striker Andrew Murphy was sent off for allegedly striking an opponent. This incident occurred after 20 minutes when he was the victim of an horrendous tackle which a poor referee deemed was legitimate and waved play on.

Both players stood eyeball to eyeball before a dozen others got involved and both players were pushing and shoving each other, when the man in black eventually got a grip of the situation and sent Murphy off without even cautioning the other player.

Fortunately the second half was a lot better, and the Woods took the game to their opponents and were unlucky not to get a win. The Woods’ defence stood firm, and Sam Phillips and John Sonuga twice thwarted the Whyteleafe attack, and when the visitors did get a sight of goal Mark Britt was up to his usual high standard and made excellent saves.

At the other end sub Max Moore brought a stunning save from the visitors’ keeper after being set up by Nick Fearon. At the death Pat Lawrence couldn’t keep his header down, following a Scott Purdue cross, and so the last chance went begging.
Man of the Match: John Sonuga.
