The Woods returned to winning ways on Saturday with a solid 3-0 success over near-neighbours Uxbridge in this Middlesex “derby” fixture, lifting them up several places and further away from the danger-zone.

Northwood’s top scorer Dan Williams made his first appearance at the Skyline Roofing Stadium since returning to the club from their opponents while there was a debut for attacker Adam Laaref, signed on a dual-registration basis from Hendon.  

Uxbridge were without former Woods goalkeeper Andrew McCorkell but could still field four former Northwood players in their squad, including new signing Wilson Chingoka, who was only 19 when he won the Woods Player of the Year award back in 2018.

And Northwood made an ideal start to the action as a pass from Teddy Stacey found Deago Dunbar-Bonnie in acres of space on the left flank. He strode forward unchallenged and drove a shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal to give goalkeeper George Legg no chance. It was the full-back’s first league goal for the club.

Within a minute, Uxbridge had a chance to level things up when former Woods wide-man Mahlondo Martin did well on the right to chip to the far post where Elijah Anthony rose to head onto the crossbar.

The game continued to swing to and fro as Kofi Anokye-Boadi had a shot which was dealt with comfortably by Legg and then Martin saw his well-struck free-kick pushed over the top by Roraigh Browne in the Northwood goal.

The Woods came close to doubling their lead after 18 minutes when first Williams and then Laaref both saw goalbound efforts blocked by some solid defending and three minutes later Browne came to their rescue again when a couple of ricochets had put Anthony in on goal but the youngster pushed his effort round the post.

Martin tested the Northwood keeper from a series of corners and then from another dangerous free-kick but Browne was equal to all of them as half-time approached. Then, the Woods scored a crucial second goal on 43 minutes as Williams saw his effort blocked but Adam Laaref was in the right place to fire home the loose ball for a debut goal.

The visitors were expected to come out firing in the second-half but they struggled to get the better of a Woods defence with Sam Jenkins adapting well to a new position in the back three. At the other end, a tempting cross from Laaref just needed a touch but Anokye-Boadi couldn’t quite reach it and then Anokye-Boadi turned provider himself with a cracking ball across. It was just behind Williams but he still managed to hook it goalwards, though just too high.

On 71 minutes a short corner was played in by Harry McKenna and headed back across goal by Luke Tingey but Jenkins couldn’t steer his shot on target but the third goal was only two minutes away. This time it was Williams who sent over the cross that had the Uxbridge defence stretched and with Laaref coming in at the far post, it was Lewis Pegg that could only put through his own goal as he attempted to intercept.

Uxbridge had one good opportunity to get back into the game when Christian Johnson was played through on goal but his touch let him down and Browne was out to smother the ball.

The Woods rang the changes with Lucas Sinclair replacing Williams, youngster Archie James coming on for a home debut and Josh Helmore having a late run-out and they held out comfortably to notch three valuable points.
With a run of four games against sides in the top six now coming up, there will be hope that the confidence gained from this win will translate into some consistent form in the next couple of weeks.
