Northwood's brave comeback from a three-goal deficit finally ended in defeat against Chertsey Town at a rain-drenched Skyline Roofing Stadium.

There was a late change to the Woods line-up after Osaretin Otote pulled up in the warm up with Sam Jenkins coming in, the only alteration from the midweek draw at Leatherhead.

Chertsey were quickly into their stride as they forced a succession of corners with Northwood goalkeeper Andrew McCorkell keeping out a couple of efforts from Ollie McCoy while Dan Williams blocked another McCoy attempt on the goal line.

The Curfews were asking all the questions as Northwood were restricted to a couple of Luke Tingey throws into the box which were cleared out by the visitors.

Chertsey continued to press and they deservedly took the lead on 21 minutes as Connor Lee directed a 25-yard free-kick into the bottom corner of the home net with McCorkell beaten by an awkward bounce. And the Curfews confirmed their superiority as they increased their lead five minutes later as Gianluca Botti converted from Lee’s pull back.

Northwood finally began to offer an attacking threat as they looked for a way back into the contest with Jenkins firing in a shot which deflected off the base of the upright before Williams was denied from close range by goalkeeper Nick Jupp.

However, Woods mood matched the worsening weather as the visitors made it 3-0 on the half-hour as Toby Little converted a close-range header.

But Northwood threw themselves a lifeline when they reduced the arrears on 35 minutes as Williams headed into the roof of the net after George Milner-Smith had flicked on Tingey’s throw to the the near post.

The Curfews finished the half strongly as they looked to restore the two-goal advantage - McCorkell saving at the near post from McCoy before Lee’s shot on the angle cleared the crossbar after Woods had conceded possession.

Northwood changed things at the break as Teddy Stacey relinquished the right wing-back duties with debutant Reece Cameron being introduced in an attacking role as Woods switched to a flat back four.

With the rain unrelenting, the conditions were becoming increasingly difficult with standing water on the pitch. But Northwood had an opportunity early in the second period as Cameron fed Kofi Anokye-Boadi who took the ball beyond the advancing Jupp but was unable to wrap his boot around the ball sufficiently to convert from a tight angle.

However, the Curfews had opportunities to put the game to bed as McCoy dragged his shot wide when one on one with McCorkell before another effort rebounded off the far upright. And the visitors were afforded another chance to put the game beyond Norhwood after they were awarded a penalty for a high foot from Jenkins, but McCorkell guessed right to keep out Botti’s 63rd minute spot kick before smothering the follow up attempt.

Northwood looked to capitalise on their let-off and they were awarded a penalty of their own a couple of minutes later as Jenkins was tripped by Luke Robertson – Carl Stewart stepping up to bring Woods back into the contest as he made no mistake from 12 yards.

With legs tiring on the saturated surface, chances were opening up at both ends with Mason Welch-Turner going close for the Curfews while Williams and Stewart both had bites at the cherry after good work from Anokye-Boadi down Northwood’s right.

Woods made another change on 83 minutes with Stewart making way for attacker Curtis Brown. But the substitution barely had time to reap dividends before Sam Omperon got beyond the home defence and finished confidently past McCorkell to secure the win for the Curfews with five minutes left on the clock – a shattering blow to spirited Northwood.
