Northwood left it late as they edged past Essex Senior League outfit Buckhurst Hill with a stoppage-time winner at a breezy Myrak Park.

There was one change to the Woods team which got the season off to a winning start a week earlier, Archie Coulter being handed his Northwood debut in an attacking midfield role with Riccardo Alexander-Greenaway missing out with a hamstring problem.

After Harry Gallagher went close early on for Woods from a Luke Tingey throw into the six-yard box, the hosts forced a couple of corners with goalkeeper Andrew McCorkell having to claw the ball away at the near post. And McCorkell was called upon again to deal with an effort from Jesse Mansaray, while at the other end, Osaretin Otote saw his shot deflected behind after he latched onto a Jack Smith through-ball.

Northwood proceeded to put the Stags under a sustained spell of pressure – Dan Williams heading wide following another Tingey throw before the same player poked wide of the upright as he got on the end of Gallagher’s whipped cross. And Woods were finding increasing space down the host’s right-hand side with Otote feeding the overlapping Deago Dunbar-Bonnie, whose cross was chipped over by Coulter at the far post.

Northwood continued to create opportunities as Smith played the ball up to Williams who created room before firing a low shot across the face of goal while Teddy Stacey combined with Otote down Woods’ right flank after the latter had swapped sides with Kofi Anokye-Boadi, the attacker shooting narrowly wide from the angle.

But Northwood suffered a scare in first-half stoppage time as Gallagher conceded a free-kick and earnt himself a yellow card in the process with Henry Clark’s pinpoint delivery finding Jonah Gregory who headed over from close range.

Woods came out strongly after the break with Williams sending a long-range half volley attempt over the bar before the Northwood striker almost latched onto a dangerous Dunbar-Bonnie ball into the six-yard box.

The visitors kept their foot on the gas with Gallagher’s skimmed header from a Smith free-kick being deflected wide, before Carl Stewart saw his beautifully struck 30-yard shot rebound off the crossbar.

Northwood made their first substitution on the hour as debutant Jaden Newman was added to the attack with Coulter making way. And Woods went close to breaking the deadlock moments later as Smith’s deep corner was headed back across by Tingey to Anokye-Boadi whose close-range header was tipped over by keeper Alex Reed.

The hosts were struggling to make much of an impression, but in a rare attack, a dipping shot from Clark narrowly cleared the Northwood crossbar. However, Woods were soon back on the offensive as Williams combined with Stewart who’s through-ball almost played in Newman, but he was denied by the faintest touch from the covering defender.

Woods were forced into another change on 77 minutes as Anokye-Boadi succumbed to an ankle knock with Harry McCorkell his replacement. And Northwood seemed to lose their way a little as the contest moved into the latter stages.

However, Northwood gathered themselves and Newman combined with Stewart before pulling the ball back to Williams who saw his shot parried behind by Reed.

The tie seemed to be heading for a replay as the contest moved into stoppage time, but the drama was still to come – the Stags being denied by a tight offside decision as substitute Marko Protic stroked the ball beyond McCorkell before a Tingey throw into the home box was helped on by Gallagher and fell to Williams who drilled the ball home in the fifth minute of added time to put Woods in the hat for the next round.
