The Woods succumbed to yet another late revival from their opponents to lose all three points from what looked like a winning position.

There was an unchanged starting line-up for this final game of the season, following a good midweek performance at Westfield and they needed to be up for a battle against an Ascot United side that were visiting for the Skyline Roofing Stadium for the first time. A win for the Woods would see them climb above their opponents so seemingly something to play for.

Prior to the match, both sides and a good-sized crowd gave a minute’s applause in memory of 15-year-old Woods Youth footballer Richard Alves Da Cunha who sadly passed away recently after a short battle with a serious illness. The Under 16s striker played for Northwood for four years and was their top scorer.

And it was Northwood who made the quicker start on what was a difficult pitch surface, soft in some areas, a little bumpy in others.

Harry McCorkell, who netted his first goal for the club in midweek, had the first shot on goal after just four minutes but the ball looped up off a deflection and was an easy collect for goalkeeper Mark Scott.

However, five minutes later, a Luke Tingey throw was half-cleared but recycled by Dan Williams who showed great strength to get the ball back into the box. Kofi Anokye-Boadi played it wide to Deago Dunbar-Bonnie and his cross saw Stephan Langley have a shot blocked but the loose ball came back to McCorkell who fired home.

The lead lasted less than two minutes though as a quick break from Harry Grant down the centre saw him spread the ball wide to Ollie Harris. His quick ball across the area picked out Liam Tack who had a simple task to slide home.

After 13 minutes, a free-kick on the edge of the box saw Archie James test Scott who fumbled the ball after an awkward bounce in front of him but he recovered it well as Langley closed in on him and seven minutes later a good through-ball from Harry McKenna put Williams through. He cut back to beat both covering defenders but his shot from distance was too high.

But after that, there was little to write about until just before half-time when James got down the right on the overlap. There were three players waiting to pounce on the cross but Scott dived feet first and just managed to clear the danger.

Early in the second half, Tack got a flick onto Oliver Lahtinen-Kalsi’s cross but the ball dropped onto the roof of the net. Back came the Woods with another James attempt from a free-kick which was too high but there was still little goalmouth action until twenty minutes to go.

Then, a Tingey throw led to quite a scramble in the box. Lucas Sinclair had a shot blocked but then a McCorkell touch went high before Tack rose to clear but played it out with his arm. The Referee pointed to the spot and the in-form Anokye-Boadi tucked away the penalty to put the Woods ahead again.

Substitutions followed with Denzel Effah and Sam Jenkins replacing Williams and James and a but later, Anokye-Boadi was replaced by Godlove Oppong but on 83 minutes the Yellas were suddenly level again as Chris Ellis chipped a ball over the top of the defence where Taylor Morgan appeared to have beaten the offside and his shot beat Andrew McCorkell despite the Woods ‘keeper getting a good hand on it.

Northwood should have been back in front a minute later when Effah did really well on the left to beat his man and he picked out Sinclair in front of goal. As the crowd waited for the net to bulge, the ball ran under the striker’s foot and rolled away.

It was to prove a decisive miss as after 86 minutes Morgan showed good strength in the final third to stop Langley from clearing the danger and he battled past him to tap past McCorkell for his second.

The Woods rallied in the final stages but Oppong had a header which flew over the bar and then Langley’s dangerous cross was well-cleared by Grant but the final whistle meant the points belonged to Ascot.
