Youth Reports 2016-17

15 January 2017

Northwood Reds Reds Under 13s 3   AC Finchley West 4

With only 11 fit available players the side really did pick itself, Dec had to withdraw due to dental issues and with Dan Jago is still recovering from a badly twisted ankle, and Ben not available, so it was always going to be a tough match against third placed AC.

The boys did not start well, with AC completely dominating the first 27 minutes of the game that saw them go 2-0 up with goals in the 16th and 27th minutes. In all honesty, it could have been a lot worse but for a great display from Rayyan, who had an excellent game in goal, making some quite brilliant saves; the score could easily have been a lot more than two. Then suddenly in the 30 minute the boys put together a very good move down the left with Oliver and then Ashley combing well which saw Ashley cross for Lewis Reid to finish well to make it 1-2. This really seemed to lift the boys and Felipe nearly followed up last week’s goal with another when an effort hit the bar. Not long after this Ashley found some space in the middle of the AC half drove forward and fired in a great shot from distance to make it 2-2 just on half time.

John and I told the boys to go out and play the second half like the last 10 minutes of the first as we could see that AC were good coming forward but not so good at defending.

The second half started and AC came out strong but the boys were defending really well and with an in form Rayyan in goal AC could not get in front, and from one of the AC corners the boys cleared the ball to Ashley who ran at the AC defence beating them with pure pace and again finished really well to make it 3-2. The game did then go from end to end with us hitting the bar again (not sure who?) and then Oliver going close as well. Despite this, AC did keep coming back and with them using their subs well always had fresh legs against what was now a very tired Northwood side. Eventually AC did get the equaliser in the 63rd minute and then with just three minutes to go got the winner.

Both John and I were very proud today of all the boys’ determination, character and spirit as they just did not give in, even though they played in very difficult conditions on a pitch that did get heavier as the game went on. Player of the match: Rayyan.

Line up : Rayyan, Ale, Arun Lewis Ryan George Felipe, Dan  Terry, Zaki, Oliver, Lewis Reid Ashley.

Well done to all the boys!
