COOPER’S BACK WITH GOAL HAPPY WOODS
NORTHWOOD 7  BARNES 0

Northwood, with Gary Cooper back in their line-up after his brief stay at Harefield United, fielded five recognised strikers for their Middlesex League game on Saturday and came away with seven goals.

Cooper, in partnership with Martin Ellis, looked a dangerous threat to the Barnes defence and they soon hit it off together.

It took them a good 15 minutes to get into their stride but they eventually asserted control and took the lead through Ellis, hitting home a Cooper cross at the second attempt.

It took Northwood another 20 minutes to get their second goal when Ellis won a chase down the line and centred for Roger Livingstone to head in.

Northwood had a slight slope in their favour in the second half and they could not have asked for a better start. Junior Jones swept a 40-yard pass deep into the Barnes territory and Livingstone ran in to sweep the ball home.

The fourth goal came from the penalty spot when Jones burst through only to be brought down in the box and Barry Gould slotted in the spot kick.

It was Ellis again who made it number five. Paddy Coburn and Alan Merison combined well on the edge of the area to send Ellis through for his 16th goal of the season.

In midfield Robin Tidd was finding acres of space and was forever prompting his strikers and the sixth goal was another from the penalty spot. Young substitute Ross Harman unleashed a tremendous volley which beat the goalkeeper but was saved by the full-back, and Gould again converted the penalty.

Fittingly, Northwood’s seventh goal came from Gary Cooper. Livingstone’s shot was blocked on the line and the ball rebounded to Cooper, who shot home.

Northwood: Currell; Heslop, J. Harman, Gould, Merison, Tidd, Coburn, Jones, Cooper, Ellis, Livingstone. Sub. R. Harman.
