CUP HOLDERS CAN’T CRACK MILL END
MILL END 1  NORTHWOOD 1

With Yeading dropping  a vital Middlesex League point at Harrow St Mary on Saturday, Northwood did themselves no favours when  they drew at Mill End, to add to their fixture backlog with a cup replay.

In the race for the league championship, Northwood now trail Yeading by four points. Although they have three games in hand, they will find it difficult to catch up now that and end-of-season fixture pile-up is inevitable.

Northwood, the holders, went into Saturday’s League Cup tie knowing they were facing their bogey team – in two other matches this season, they have failed to find the Mill End net.

And things looked grim when the Northwood defence stood off a challenge, and Miller accepted a simple chance as Russell could do no more than parry his first effort.

Despite changing the shape of their team, Northwood could make little impression on a resolute defence. Indeed, after 30 minutes Mill End went so close to adding a second goal.

Northwood finally drew level when Nigel Franklin ghosted past two defenders before netting the equaliser, but although Woods continued to press for a winner, Mill End comfortably held out.

Northwood:  Russell, Mills, Hammond, Gould, Saunders, Tidd, Franklin, Byrne, Heslop, Cooper, Jones, sub. Dibbens.
