LEGION BLITZ WRECKS CUP HOLDERS
NORTHWOOD 0  HILLINGDON B.L. 3

A three-goal Legion blast sent holders Northwood crashing out of the Middlesex League Challenge Cup in this semi-final replay on Saturday. The first half was without much in the way of excitement or goals, but all that changed after the interval.

After two minutes’ play in the second half, the chink in Woods’ armour became apparent – they still lacked strength up front. Legion seemed to sense this, and went in for the kill. Shots rained in on the Northwood goal, and despite some valiant blocking, Jones eventually hit home off a post to put legion in front.

Surprisingly enough, this was the signal for the start of a Northwood onslaught. They began pressing on the Legion goal, and they were perhaps unlucky to be refused a penalty when McGowan looked to be brought down by keeper Carter.

But the Northwood appeals were waved away, and the Legion raced away to score, tragically through an own goal by the Woods’ defender Mills, who headed into his own net after Larry Frost had drawn keeper Russell and chipped in a dangerous cross.

Still Northwood fought back, though, and they went close to scoring when a Gould header smacked against the bar, and the ball was then cleared off the line.

But at the other end Legion wrapped up the game when Larry Frost was put clear, and he slid the ball past the advancing Russell.

Northwood:  Russell, Harman, Mills, Gould, Presswell, Tidd, Pearce, Coburn, Dibbens, McGowan, Jones, sub. N. Roche.
