TONY ROCHE BREAKS LEG IN CUP-TIE
HAREFIELD UNITED 3  NORTHWOOD 3

Harefield and Northwood have to play again to decide who will play in the final of the Harefield Hospital Charity Cup. Monday’s tie at Breakspear Road ended all square as the Middlesex League side raised their game against the Athenian hosts.

And Harefield started strongly and they may wonder why they did not win the tie at the first go. They went ahead within a few minutes when Charlie Townsend floated a free-kick into the Northwood net.

More misfortune hit Northwood when Tony Roche broke a leg in two places after challenging Colin Talbot for the ball.  When Barry Wanless made it 2-0 to Harefield, the game looked virtually over. However, Barry Gould put Northwood back in the match with a penalty, then Glyn Jones shot home the equaliser.

Harefield still pushed forward in the second half, and they went back in front when Barry Wanless scored from Nick Gill’s low cross. Alan Burn had the chance to clinch the game, but he missed a penalty awarded for a foul on Ian Harvey.

This inspired Northwood’s efforts to force a replay, which they did when Robin Tidd netted a minute from full-time.

Northwood:  Russell, J. Harman, Mills, Gould, Hester, Tidd, T. Roche, R. Harman, Cooper, Pearce, Jones, sub. N. Roche.
